Group portrait (constituting collective subjectivity) | 2023
archival print on Hahnemühle paper | 200x125 cm
(digital collage made out of identity photographs from Socialist Romania)
In seeking to comprehend the constitution of collective subjectivity, subjects from photographs originally intended for identity cards in Socialist Romania have been aggregated. Employing imagination, the objective is to construct a visual representation of a collective subject. In a societal landscape overshadowed by individualism, fragmentation, competition, and conflict, the ability to envision collectivities becomes increasingly challenging. This prompts contemplation on how to materialize a collective identity that underscores interdependence, highlighting our reliance on cooperation and unity as a group rather than isolated individuals This exploration urges us to question the relationship between individual and collective identity and perhaps an initial step involves exploring means to imagine and portray collectives instead of focusing solely on individuals.
